Listening portfolio entry no 3(podcast)

Source: Victoria Tunnel reveals mystery http://download.tvnz.co.nz/podcasts/onenews/6pm_tunnel_260311.mp4

Strategies
1.listen for keywords
2. take notes
3.check in dictionary if I do not know the meaning of the word
Evaluate
1.This was helpful and I could generally know the main idea. However, the speaker   talks fast, so I still cannot hear everything in this way.
2.Taking notes was quite hard for me this time. I only wrote down some keywords. I have watched this video for 6 times, but I still cannot get some words or sentences. However, it is useful to get the main topic.
3.Actually I did hear some new words, but I could not spell them correctly. I tried to search them in the dictionary and I got some words such as double-barreled, archaeologist. However, I cannot find all of them.
 Reflection
1.Listening for keywords is a good way to understand the main idea, but some   details can be missed sometimes.
2. Note taking is a bit unrealistic to do in general. I think I should find a friend to do the same thing, and then we can compare our notes and talk about what we heard.
3.using this method, I am able to learn some words. However, it is really take time to guess and find out these words. Perhaps I do not need to know every words and I should guess the meaning of the words. Next time I should choose right level of listening for me.

Listening portfolio entry no 2 (podcast)

Source: Mr. Right
http://www.focusenglish.com/dialogues/romance/mrright.html
Strategies: a) listen for main idea
b)using the transcript
Evaluation:
After listening to the conversation for two times, I am able to get the main idea. Using the transcript is useful because it helps me to understand some words which I am not sure when I am listening, especially the speaker talks very fast in some part.

Reflection:
I think using the transcript is a good strategy to improve my listening. In this way ,I can check the listening by yourself exactly. Also, I can write down some useful vocabulary or some sentences. This practice is a simple one, so I get the main idea easily. I consider I should choose an appropriate podcast for me next time.

Listening portfolio entry no 1 (vedio)

Source: Tsunamis

Strategies:
a)understand the background of topic, think about the context
b)try to get the main idea
c)repeat as many times as I need
d)taking notes

Evaluation:
a).Before I start to watch the video ,I did some research about Tsunamis. I found it is useful to give me some ideas about Tsunami so that I can easily to catch up with the topic.
b). I could get the  main idea, which was about how  a tsunami is born and how it destroys. In addition, this video talked about a tsunami happened in Indonesia in 2006.Finally,it gave advice for how to survive in a tsunami.
c) It is very helpful when I was listening to this topic. After repeating several times, I could get more and more information from the video.
d) Taking note is great way for me to understand the topic. I wrote down some key words or some sentence which I heard from the video. Because that guy talked in medium speed, I was able to hear most of information. According to this way, I got more detail information and I understood this topic more clearly. For example, when he talked about how a tsunami happen, in the deep water, tsunamis waves travelled fast about 500 miles a hour but only reached the height of  a few of feet. However, the shallow waves has lower speed because of the ocean floor ,and it would raise the height until it land fell and it can reached 10 storied building. Therefore, it is easily for me to understand why tsunami was so powerful.

Reflection:
a) I think understanding the topic is quite useful. However, I cannot know all the topic, so sometime it is not available in this way.
b) It is very important to get the main idea of the topic. The problem is that you should have knowledge related to the topic.
c)Repeating many times is  a good strategy, but I still could not get all the information. For instance, I can heard some new vocabulary but  I do not know the meaning. Maybe I need to expand my vocabulary.
d)During watching  this video, taking notes was much more useful for me to gain the detail of information. However, he talked fast but my writing was slow, so it is better to do more practice .In addition, I should use some abbreviation to take notes.

Introduce myself

Hi, my name is Emmet Wang. I come from China. I live in New Zealand and have been here for 4 years.
Some of my hobbies include playing basketball, listening music, going fishing or reading books. At the weekend, I like going to the beautiful beach and enjoying the sunshine. I am doing this course because my pronunciation is not really well and I would like to improve myself. I believe I will achieve my goal one day.
